RYA Coastal Skipper Course

This is an advanced skippers course for yachtsmen and women who have
considerable knowledge of sailing and navigation.
Duration: Six days from 2pm Monday to
Saturday evening. Coastal Skipper course completion available all weeks.

RYA tuition, accommodation (Monday pm till Sunday am),bedding provided, food and drinks onboard, mooring fees and waterproofs.
Previous sailing experience: Approx
15 days sailing with a minimum of 300 sea miles including night passages.
This is time where you have skippered a boat or taken an active role in
crewing, as opposed to being a passenger. Sailing skills above Day Skipper
practical standard.
Previous navigation experience: A sound
understanding of navigation and several passages logged as Skipper. The
Coastal Skipper/Yachtmaster shorebased theory course can be combined with
the practical course over a two-week period. We advise you to study at
home beforehand, to optimise sailing time onboard as we sail for 5-8 hours
a day.
For The Coastal Skipper Practical Course Completion Certificate there is no exam. For those who wish to do the Coastal Skipper Practical exam we can arrange for an independent R.Y.A. examiner to test you at the end of the week. (see below for more details)
Summary of subjects covered on Coastal
Skipper practical course:
- Passage planning, navigation, weather, ports of refuge, tidal heights and tidal streams. Custom procedures.
- Preparation for sea, engine, maintenance checks etc. Knowledge of safety, briefing crew and use of equipment for offshore passages. Delegating responsibilities, watch keeping.
- Pilotage, including use of soundings, transits, clearing bearings, buoyage, port & harbour regulations.
- Passage making and ability as skipper taking care of the crew and yacht, navigation, deckwork. Awareness of meteorological trends. Understanding use and limitations of electronic navaids including GPS and radar.
- Preparation for heavy weather and yacht handling in strong winds. Navigation in restricted visibility.
- Yacht handling under power, controlling the boat effectively in a confined space and berthing in various conditions.
- Yacht handling under sail, using the sails to control the boat effectively in a confined space. Anchoring and mooring in different conditions of wind and tide. sailing effectively on all points of sail.
- Emergency situations and how to deal with them, man overboard, fire, distress flares, liferaft, radio mayday, secure a tow and helicopter rescue procedure.
Coastal Skipper exam:
For those interested in doing the Coastal Skipper exam you first need
to have:
- Coastal Skipper Course Completion Certificate (or have 30 days sailing,
a minimum of 2 days as skipper, 800 miles and 12 night hours)
- Coastal Skipper/Yachtmaster shorebased course.
- Logged 20 days at sea, a minimum of 2 days as skipper, 400 sea miles
(this has been reduced for those holding the above RYA C.S. Course Completion
Certificate)
- First Aid Certificate (£85)
- Radio Course Certificate(£120).
