RYA Day Skipper Course (tidal)

This practical course covers all the basic skills to skipper a yacht and gives you a chance to take charge on short passages under instruction with plenty of advice and help from your Instructor.

Duration: Six day course from 2pm Monday to late Saturday afternoon.

£500 March 17th to Oct 20th.
£475: Oct 27th, Nov, Dec 15th.
This price includes
6 days RYA tuition, accommodation ,bedding provided, food and drinks onboard, mooring fees and waterproofs.

Previous sailing experience: Fair sailing ability. Approx. 5 days, 100 sea miles and 4 night hours (all of this would be covered in our 6 day competent crew course).

Previous navigation experience: Ideally, you should do the Day Skipper shorebased course before the practical course. We offer this 5 day residencial theory course in Gibraltar for £500. If you do not have time to do a full week there is a 2 day RYA Navigation course. Or we can send you Trafalgar Sailing study material to help prepare you for the Day Skipper practical course in Gibraltar, Canary islands or Cape Verde.

Summary of subjects covered on Day Skipper practical course:

  1. Passage planning and preparation for sea, engine and maintenance checks etc.
  2. Deck work, knowing when to change sails to suit conditions.
  3. Yacht handling under power and sail, steer and trim sails effectively on all points of sail.
  4. Anchoring & mooring, taking charge when mooring alongside, stern to and coming to a bouy in various conditions of wind and tide.
  5. Navigation: Taking and plotting fixes, working a DR and EP, tidal heights and streams, working out a course to steer to allow for tidal stream, leeway and drift, IALA bouyage, use of echo sounder and GPS.
  6. Pilotage, plan for entry or departure from harbour. Leading and clearing lines, transits and soundings. Shipping lanes.
  7. Meteorology, interpret shipping forecasts and barometer reading.
  8. Rules of the road, International regulations for preventing collisions at sea.
  9. Victualling.
  10. Emergency situations and how to deal with them, man overboard, fire, distress flares, liferaft, radio mayday, secure a tow and helicopter rescue procedure.
