Sailing Area – Trafalgar Sailing Gibraltar

The Competent crew and Day Skipper RYA sailing courses start in the Straits of Gibraltar where the Atlantic meets the Mediterranean at the fabled ‘Pillars of Hercules’ between the continents of Europe and Africa. These historic waters have been man’s gateway to the known world for thousands of years and make a fantastic tidal training area.

You have it all here, with over 300 days of sunshine a year, great wind between two mountain ranges and a wonderfully varied cruising area. From the first class marinas of the Costa del Sol, like Sotogrande, Estepona and Marbella, to the windswept beaches of Tarifa and the natural rugged Atlantic coast to the West.

You could be practising your sailing and pilotage skills in the busy Bay of Gibraltar one day, planning a passage across the shipping lanes to Africa the next and be mooring in a smart Mediterranean marina the day after.

Some of our favourite ports are:

RYA Sailing Courses in Gibraltar Trafalgar Sailing Gibraltar

Gibraltar is a quirky “home away from home” for the British. English is spoken and we use pounds. If you have time before or after your RYA course we recommend a Gibraltar Rock tour.

RYA Sailing Courses in Gibraltar Trafalgar Sailing Ceuta

Ceuta is small Spanish enclave in Africa, full of winding streets and character. A feast for the senses with great places to eat and a fresh market of herbs and spices.

RYA Sailing Courses in Spain

Sotogrande is a beautiful, elegant and a quiet escape from the busy Costa del Sol. It is famous for Valderama Golf and the high goal polo. The marina has won awards for architecture. The Villa where we run the RYA shore based courses is in Sotogrande.

RYA ‘Mile Builder’

We also run RYA “mile builder ” weeks which have longer overnight passages. They are ideal for those who need to log extra tidal miles for Yachtmaster Coastal Skipper or Yachtmaster Offshore. Also perfect for an adventurous Competent crew sailor who would like the experience.

A typical RYA tidal mile builder could sail from the Rock of Gibraltar along the Costa de la Luz (Coast of Light) up to Cadiz and the Rio Guadiano, a stunning river anchorage at the border of Spain and Portugal. In Portugal Vilamoura and Faro are also popular destinations.

If you would like to do a longer mile builder on a private charter basis, you could also sail to the Canary Islands over 2-3 weeks. These stunning Spanish islands; Lanzarote, Tenerife, Gomera and Gran Canaria lay about 600 nautical miles South of Gibraltar and about 70 miles from the African coast.
