Simon was amazing. He is a very patient trainer that can easily relate to people with less experience. His enthusiasm for sailing really shows when he goes deep into explaining each important item that a person must learn. He tailors a conversation so people understands, and then reiterates along the way. Lots of examples from his experience are included that helps you understand and put into practice. Especially for us with our new boat. He became part of our journey for a few days. I will totally recommend him and Trafalgar to others. Oh… the other thing about Simon is that when the pressure is on he is calm and creates an environment in the situation that removes the stress.
Thank you very much to Trafalgar Sailing and Gavin for an outstanding 3 weeks family cruise from Gibraltar to Torrevieja during August 2019 and expert live-aboard training in all cruising aspects from lines and knotwork to sail handling, navigation, anchoring and mooring in tight spaces in all weather conditions. Every day was a learning experience for our family as Gavin tested every part of the boat thoroughly, identifying and troubleshooting boat defects and showed a lot of patience with our tough cookie kids of different ages (14,13, 8 and 6). Gavin got our eldest son really interested and involved in all sailing aspects from hoisting/lowering the mains and genoa, steering the boat, dinghy handling, to mooring and even scaling the mast to disentangle snagged lines; he was really chuffed to receive his competent crew certificate at the end of the cruise. For my own Skipper training he gave me a full suite of patient practice and confidence to navigate unfamiliar coasts and harbours along the Costa del Sol and Costa Blanca, the tight Mar Menor entry canal (where the bridge doesn’t always open on time) during day and overnight sailing and maneuvering a cat into tight mooring spaces in windy conditions. Thanks also to Trafalgar Sailing for planning our tailored holiday and dates, excellent communications throughout and assistance in dealing with everything from customs and family train delays to engine breakages; even arranging parking for our backup campervan. Looking forward to working with you in future and our next catamaran sailing adventure!
Both Gabi and I had the adventure of our lives (!) and we didn’t even raise a sail. Titan Bill (Bill the Titan), as we know him, was during this trip mentor, rigger, sailor, surveyor (ha!), engineer, electrician; if I’m allowed a license, the very knot that kept us safely bound to our adventure. The man is wonder material. I can only hope I, we, stood up to our tasks; that he had the best possible time onboard; that it was, and still is, as worth it for him as it was for us. We miss him and Bona Fides terribly by now. It was the hardest summer I ever had, yet my very best. I’m still pinching myself once in a while to make sure it wasn’t but a dream.
Thank you Jim and to Cathy for organising everything, it was a pleasure to meet you both and the sailing trip was fantastic. I passed the Yachtmaster exam. We stay in touch.
